  1. brand new parts can be bought a lot cheaper than UK from:

    http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-dr400-1981-sx_model13202/partslist/

I just bought side panels (£20 each) and suzuki stickers for the tank. Side panel stickers are being sold on ebay for £5 each.

    Cheers Rob

  2. Great to see a web page on this model, now a question was there a SP500?

  3. Thankyou Rob, thats great :)

And to Bernhard’s question, yes! I beleive that they were only available in Italy where the bikes were very popular (but don’t hold me to that!)

  4. I thought I was the only person in the world with one of these bikes.

Great idea for a forum, I’ll keep this in my favorites.

  5. Just bought a GN400 to do up, no real idea why as never liked when a lad (into X7’s, PE – all that 2 stroke kit) and more recently enduro bikes but nice to see a new site on the 4 stroke single.
I’ve got a vague idea to try and turn my GN into a cafe racer although all is standard and in pretty good nick, mains have gone so guess I’ll sort engine and then see how I feel once back on the rode, I’ve never actually ridden one!
I’m not really an ‘owners site’ type but if I try to keep the site posted it might make me get on with sorting the poor old thing out.
    Watch this space!

  6. I think a cafe racer would be absolutly ace! Droped bars, rearsets, loud pipes! haha

Think of the site as a….discussion comunity hehe.
Good luck with her though. I’m sure you will love every bit of her whens shes going :)

  7. hi,purchased a 1980 dr400 last xmas,a rough non
runner but 90% complete with a view to put it back on the road.I got it running and decided to look for the original parts that are missing and am still looking for most, exhaust, side panels,
ignition switch, wireing loom.Is there any one
manufacturing pattern parts for the above items
or can anybody inform me of other suzukis that
share the same part and partnumber.any info
    much appreciated,thanks, steve.

  8. Hi Steve.
The first thing i suggest is joing the discussion board!
The exhaust is now un-obtainable…all i can suggest is finding a second hand one (theres a end can on ebay currently, type in dr 400 and look in shops http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SUZUKI-DR400-EXHAUST-SILENCER-STD-29F-9-68_W0QQitemZ220127550244QQihZ012QQcategoryZ10534QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem). There is also a wiring harness on ebay (but it may not account for indicaters ect) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110176224786&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=001. Ignition switch took me months to find! and i ended up paying £30 off of ebay for it. The side pannels you can get from a website, in the links section of this site. The link is http://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki_model13052/
Hope to see you on the board soon!
    Good luck with the bike.

  9. I have a Gn 400 in the shed with a spare engine keep saying I will sort it out so may be now I will

  10. DR400s are rare ? I thought it was a common run around until I finally get the Sanglas going again, but there you go.

I’ve had a tatty DR for the past three years or so as a back up while I’ve been sorting other bikes. Apart from blowing headlight bulbs it’s been pretty reliable, but only since I looked at the cylinder head and replaced the inlet valve and guide has it been easy to start. No logic, but it starts easier, goes better and can do 70-80mpg if used gently. Still uses oil, though.

Main problem was that it was too attractive to local kids – I’ve recovered it twice after it’s been stolen by kids and no longer looks very standard for obvious reasons. It is now secured with a heavy enough look to deter most young tea leaves.

Good luck with the site – I’ll keep an eye on it.

    Greg

  11. Great to see a web site devoted to the Suzuki DR 400 and SP/GN Have 2 DR400’s. Have some cool Phot’s on DR’s wheel stands close up’s are you going to put a Galery page up. Cheers John

  12. Some parts seem cheaper from paul smeetons Bitzforbikes.based in manchester

    http://www.bitzforbikes.co.uk/

good to have a site for suzi thumpers, Thank,s
    Robin

  13. Hi Guys,
Picked up my SP400 on Monday. My friend had said I could have it ages ago – he parked it on his farm around September 1986 when the tax ran out, and it hasn’t been touched since. I am hoping to restore it – but only to get it back on the road – I am not talking concours!
It still has 21 year old petrol in the tank!
A lot of rust – more than I had imagined – it’s going to need a lot of work.
Very interested in this site – I’ll keep in touch
    Peter
ps – how do I submit photos?

  14. Hi Peter
To submit pictures you need to sign upto the discussion board, and post them in the members area.
I may introduce a gallery page to this site, in which case you will be able to post them in a comment. go to http://www.tinypic.com and use the IMG code.
    Thanks. Matt

  15. Hi folks,
I warmed to the charms of the sp370 this summer, after owning two lively Yamaha XT500s, I then read a report on the sp machines and decided to get one. They are so easy to manage off road too!
I bought one off e.bay, and began to alter and improve it a little, after finding that the original seat tailpiece was so heavy, I decided to replace that with a wide plastic unit, (I’m not a purist) and then to tidy up and lighten the whole rear end.
These bikes are very nippy, and so I am now looking to lighten the whole machine where possible, but retaining the lights etc.
I will report more on progress later, I think these are great little bikes, and sadly overlooked!
    Regards, Graham.

  16. Having a bit of trouble finding somebody who will be able to re-chrome the fork stanchions.
Forks are dismantled now and ready to be done – but they need to be Hard Chrome plated after being ground.
    Any ideas?
Maybe someone has a pair they in good nick that they could sell to me?

  17. Hi all
Had a dr about 4 years now and have thrashed round the lanes every weekend and it copes with anything no prob even don hare n hounds on it but must say kicking it over on a muddy slope sucks.Good strong bikes.

  18. Hi all!
Can’t believe someone loves my bike as much as me!! I’ve got an SP370 and agree with everything Graham wrote – fab bikes!!

Peter – as for chrome if you’re near Hull try Quality Chrome. They can be pricey but the quality is excellent. I’m sure they’ve got a website. All the scooter boys round here swear by them!

  19. Hi all. This site was a very useful find! Ive got an ‘82 Italian Dr500s that I bought 2 months ago with less than 10k miles. Imported in UK in 2001 with 7k Km. In pretty good overall condition and looking forward to some local Enduro and hill climbs next year around Derby

  20. SP500 from Europe and USA. Basically the same as a Euro DR but with round headlight and clocks. Cant see much between them really. Any other differences?

  21. hi does anybody have used spares left over from restoration projects that are servicable but tatty and therefor not put on the bike?such as side panels, silencer and seat as im rebuilding a dr400 as a winter hack and just need to find thease last few bits but dont want to pay new prices for now, eventually i will restore the bike but just want to get on the road for winter if not ill have to buy new!thanks steve.

  22. Steve, now have a pair of fork stanchions – which need re-chroming as I have found a “new” pair – so make me an offer if you want to.
Guys (and Girls) can anyone give me a tip as to how to undo very stubborn nuts on at least two of the engine mounts – I have come pretty close to rounding one of them – help!
need to remove the engine for satisfactory restoration of the frame
    cheers

  23. i own a mint sp 370 with 2500 miles on the clock.and have a few spaires

  24. spare tank mint condition frame with v5 frt mudgard tel 07919456856

  25. Chris, do you have a spare exhaust?
    Also need handlebars.
    let me know
    cheers

  26. peter, thank you for the reply regarding fork
stanchions, mine i am sure will be ok for m.o.t.
regarding the removal of stubborn nuts/bolts,i
have used an angle grinder to remove rounded
nut and then drift out the offending mounting bolt, only if you plan on replacing the item and
refinishing the frame, nut splitters can be purchased from certain tool shops/outlets ,applying heat can also help,ie
blowtorch but be aware of the dangers when
    grinding(sparks)or burning equippment due to
petrol tank going on fire or anything else for that matter!inot forgetting safety gloves and goggles,
if you are unfamilier useing the above methods,
get a skilled person to do it,hope this helps, steve.

  27. I have a very tatty gn 400 that i use for bits n pieces for the dr ,mostly still there but motor’s in the dr [therd one iv put in it other two get round to sorting one day] so if anyone wants bits give me a shout. As for stubborn bolts try a hammer n chisel and plenty of W/D.

  28. Hi there all you SP/GN/DR fans I also love these bikes having owned 3 over the last 25 years still have 2 off them an SP 370 in dire need of restoration (or should I just get it back in action) and I have my my trusty SP400 I used regularly up to 10 years ago then restored it and now it sits there unused shame realy(to many other bikes)all singles of coarse. These bikes are great green laners/back road plodders luv em!

  29. Hi, I am working on a long running SP400 project which is road legal but still needs cosmetically finishing. I have loads of reference pics of my restoration which I’m happy to share with fellow restorers.
    Cheers
    Simon

  30. Hi Simon.
    that sounds great.
are you signed onto the discussion boards?
If so, i may create a board for ‘your restorations’ so people can share what they’ve done. I may also add a page to this main site, so people can leave comments with pictures in.
    Watch this space! haha

  31. Matt,
I would like to see everyone’s pics; I have loads of my rusty SP – the one that was stood in a barn, untouched for 21 years.
I have now managed to get the engine out – with plenty of patience and a lot of brute force (knew that sledge hammer would come in handy!)
Hoping to have some sort of rolling chassis by Christmas as I am hoping to have the wheels re-built this week.
I think the next major problem to sort out is going to be the Exhaust – which for some reason, is in two pieces – not three as in all the literature I can see.
I would be interested in any exhaust systems or pieces – like the guards etc..
    thanks
    Peter

  32. have just bought 1980 dr 400 came with two spare engines open to offers

  33. Hi Mike,
May be interested – how much are you looking for – and are they definitely runners?
Also, where are you – in case I might consider collecting?
Do you have any other spares – like an exhaust for example?
    thanks

  34. dont know about runners but one has kick start attached and is free running and has compression appears to have polished ali crank cases the one in my bike is the same not for the purist perhaps . other engine has no kick start on it so has not been turned over but think this is orignal crank case cover damaged. no exhaust sorry .location near romsey hampshire .

  35. i also have complete service mannual which covers dr, sp gn models

  36. any body know why the resistor on my bike only has one wire is this correct

    • No, should have 2 wires.

    • PS they are soldered on the back of the resistor.

  37. hi,anybody know of supplier of pattern ignition
swiitch for dr400s(1980 model)or have one for sale, thanks, steve.

  38. Hi Steve,
Try Jeff Hall Motorcycles in Sheffield – speak to Kevin on the counter. He has been very helpful with bits for my 1981 SP400 – even managed to find me a brand new rear brake cable today – from stock!
The place is a treasure trove!
    tell him I sent you!

  39. Hi Mike
Do you still have the a spare engine open to offers? Still not started on my project GN, needs mains and previous owner partly dismantled engine and I’ve not been able to face the task of trying to find all the bits yet, a replacement engine sounds a lot easier! I’m only in Ringwood so could collect easily?
    Rgds – Trev

  40. yes phone me on 07919 896112

  41. hello,
On with restoring my old yellow dr400 as we speak.Frame away getting painted. All was going well till i took the head off, bent exhaust valve, still now ive found this site i can source some bits.

  42. What is the best engine oil for a 26 old 4 stroke single which hasn’t run for 21 years?
Just how difficult is it to replace the rings on my engine, I am worried about the lack of compression?

  43. Hi i have two 1980 DR400 s one complete and one in bits. one frame has number on, i also have spare forks, yolks and shocks from States, gasket set, spare carb ,new brake shoes, super trap silencer, the complete bike runs but burns oil and has been stored for thirteen years i bought this all for restoration project but new job and house to do work on so sadly all must go all going to best offer for this fantastic old thumper phone 07825547738 this web site is a great idea!!

  44. Sheldon,
where are you? I would be quite interested to see the bikes – interested in the silencer, shocks and gasket stuff

  45. Beaky`s Motorcycles near Dorking Surrey, should be able to supply a pattern ignition switch for a dr400.

  46. Hi Peter just call me on the number live in Beverley wont split selling all complete job lot make me an offer

  47. still struggling with main resistor value on my dr400s please help!

  48. hi,anybody know if the sp400 ignition switch is
wired the same as the dr400s?or shares the same
part number-still trying to find last few spares
    before i rebuild mr 1980 dr,looking for used spares such as side panels,ignition switch,decompressor cable,doing it on a budget,it
will not be mint or concourse but needs to be used
and enjoyed, hopefully, this summer, looking forward to classic bike shows to try and find these
    elusive bits.

  49. Steve, I wouldn’t bother with the decompressor cable. I have just got my SP400 through the MOT, it sailed through, is now taxed and insured – and lives again – without the decompressor cable fitted.
Remember, this bike was stood in a barn for 21 years!
It runs a little rough – but you would wouldn’t you!!

  50. Suzuki SP 370 for sale – Offers

  52. FAO Mike Powell
Sorry Mike never got round to ringing you, laptop got nicked and I had no idea how much info I would lose that was not backed up like bookmarks, etc. I managed to pick up a motoer and have just fitted it today, fired up after only a few kicks as well. I’ve resisted the temptation to try it out until I;ve changed oil and sorted brakes. First time I actually remember hearing the Suzi single, sounds good and I’m tempted to keep the GN for the summer rather than back on ebay. Trev

  53. Hi evryone – does anyone have a Carburettor in good nick available pretty quick?
CV type – SP400 preferred, but DR Mikuni type would be considered
My bike runs at will, but back-fires far too much for my health!!
Any ideas as to what else I can examine for it’s cause?
    Peter

  54. FAO Peter Goodier
Hello mate i have a couple of ideas, check the jets in the carb are not blocked and the problem i had with my DR was water in the fuel tank it ran like a drunk dog!?
Its good to see a site devoted to the DR, i have a 1981 DR400S i use it every day 20miles to work and back and green lane it whenever i can, its a great bike.
I also have bit of a problem its a bit noisy on the top end, does any one know if the tapets can be adjusted if so what are the cap sizes.
    thanks, Mark.

  55. FAO Mark Freemantle:
info from workshop manual for checking valve clearance is as follows:
intake and exhaust valves must be checked and adjusted when piston is at Top Dead Centre – ENGINE COLD
Since it may be difficult to insert feeler guage, clearance is adjusted by turning back the adjusting screw 1/8 turn (45 degree) after it contacts the valve.

  56. Hi all. Im looking for some DR500s decals and a red mint rear fender/ mudguard.

  57. f ao peter goodier have spare mikuni carb 07919 896112

  62. Hiya
Just bought a running, just, DR 400.
Very used and tatty, seized clutch, footrests have been reversed and brake pedal shortened, gear pedal reversed?
Needs sidepanels amongst other stuff, anyone help, Gloucester/Bristol area
    many thanks
    Alan

  63. hello all, i own 4 sps one of which was my first bike back in 79, i had only owned that for 3 months when i had it apart and had alf hagon bore and stroke it to 500, just about to put that back on the road for this season after about 20 years in bits, 2 standard sp 370s and a DR370 replica, so kind of familiar with these bikes if any one needs any help or advise, willing to help where i can

    • Hello everyone, im 15 and i just got myself a 1978 dr370 95% all original, its just missing the 2 side airbox covers and a strip of plastic which goes under the seat it also needs the light bulb for the tail light. The seat was ripped, the bike has some rust, but otherwise looks ok. I did an oil change aswell as change the spark plug and it fires up on the first kick. The paint on the engine looks a little faded and the exhuast has some rust color to it, but its fine. The tank is really clean with the original paint (silver) the headlight works fine only in High.

My question is that sometimes it turns off or i turn it off and i try to start it again and it will not start. Unless i leave it for an hour or two or even more. Then i come and it starts in the first kick.
      I am puzzled ???
I do not know what can be the problem. The mecanic to which i took it just told me to do a valve adjust and clean the carb.

I really like this bike but im thinking of selling to get a street legal bike like a dr400, dr500 or dr600.
If someone wants to see pictures or might be interested in buying please email me. I have the title in hand.

Or if anyone might know what can be wrong with my bike also please let me know via email.

      Im located in California USA.

      • ‘My question is that sometimes it turns off or i turn it off and i try to start it again and it will not start. Unless i leave it for an hour or two or even more. Then i come and it starts in the first kick.’
As a dealer would say, ”They are all like that sir!”
You either just are not kicking it to spin the engine fast enough as it is a magneto ingnition. -Or the wires,/connectors from mag/Low tension wires/connectors require Attention, the bike is about 30 years old after all.

      • Greetings Pancho,
This email is coming to you from New Zealand. I have a 1980 DR400. It’s a rough old beast, but it goes well and starts easily, hot or cold. It has 1987 Kawasaki KX250 forks, front wheel and disc brake and also the KX250 rear wheel and disc brake.

When I was a young chap I used to mow several lawns. On one of the lawns I used a masport president 4 stroke mower. If when I was refueling, I didn’t refuel very very quickly, the mower wouldn’t restart until several minutes had passed. I found this rather annoying because it was a waste of my time waiting for the mower to cool down. My Dad made a slight adjustment of the mixture screw. I can’t recall if he made the mixture leaner or richer, but what he did fixed the problem. Might be worth a try for you.

  64. Mike, fitted the carb on Friday – it’s a miracle! I cannot believe what a difference it has made – no more back-fire, nice steady tick over – and it started 3rd kick! Amazing – normally takes me about 30mins to get it going.
    Fantastic result – thanks Mike
    Peter

  75. Hi Guys, did anyone see my article in the “Modern Classics” feature in MCN last week (dated 16.07.08) Page 28 – What a bike!!!
Quite a response too from all sorts of directions, one of the main shops I have dealt with during the restoration of my bike had received quite a few calls as a direct result – they must be very pleased………………

  78. Hi Mike.

Your in the right place mate!
Peter Goodier (comments above) had his SP400 restoration featured in MCN last week, you can see the article on the discussion board. Personally i’d start by signing up, and harassing him a little!

    Thanks for the interest.

  79. I am looking for all kind of spares for a 1981 DR500. If anyone knows of any please let me know. Many thanks.

  80. Hey great site, Ive just picked up a DR 400 S 1980 ish , my tank is a bit rough so Im thinking of making one out of Aluminium, I might do the side covers the same as well, does any one know of an online manual as I need to rebuild my front shocks, or could some one please scan and post the relivant information.
    Thanks Pete from New Zealand.

  81. hi I asked on technical page if DR500 uses same CDI as DR400, no reply yet so thought i’d try on here. Also asked if anyone has any info on the white bros scrambler of the 80’s,it was based on a DR400. phoned them myself and no help. I am building one and only have one feature from an old mag to work from. any help would be fab. cheers then. DEL

  82. Amazing BBS i would say.

I have being using a 1980 DR400 for the last 8 years on mostly fire roads, here on the left coast of the US, and some desert runs.

I found an SP400, that looked terrible, w green colored gas in the carb….. Drained the carb 3x w fresh gas, connected a spare gas tank from a XR350 project… cranked it 4 or 5 times…. and it came to life….

Did i mentioned that there is no battery, so i used one of those 6 volts battery from an RC model.

There is a yahoo group user board on Yahoo., not too active like this site.

Ebay is your best friend as always

    M

  87. run a gn 400 flattracker in the arizona desert.
it is a great running bike and keeps up with on
trail rides just fine. have always wanted a 80
dr 400 as a companion bike for rougher trails
but they are so difficult to find. run an xt 600
and transalp for long trips. still find the gn a
favorite as it is friendly and no trouble in 20k.
i prefer simple lower bikes. ~cheers~

  94. Hi i have a 1981 dr400 that gets no spark, and was wondering if there was anyone that could tell me where the three wires from the coil go to. Thanks

    • 1 wire to ing coil under tank via on/off switch other 2 are lightcoils which are light switch activated.
Check that 6 volts go to points condenser also on/off switch (remove h/light & trace 2 wires to switch, 6 v should go in and come out)

      • When engine is being turned over as no current gies to the ing via the battery!

      • PS sorry I may have got that wrong as I was refering to an SP, Not a DR.
        Apologies

  95. Hello everyone, im 15 and i just got myself a 1978 dr370 95% all original, its just missing the 2 side airbox covers and a strip of plastic which goes under the seat it also needs the light bulb for the tail light.
